Recommendations for Race Organizers

   Website

  • Use PaddleGuru.com for registration, results, directions, etc.

  • Publish results on Paddle Guru on day of race if possible. Otherwise ASAP.

  • Include your contact Information: Name, Phone, E-mail

  • If Paddle Guru is not used, provide results in an Excel spread sheet.​

   Course 

  • Offer 2 race courses: short (3 miles +) and long (6 miles+)

  • Launch from a landing with both a ramp and a dock, or else from a beach.

  • Use an out-and-back route (as opposed to circular or one way) to maximize lines of sight and efficiency for safety boats.

   Start

  • Head up stream (improves boat control and paddler safety).

  • Use a loud horn to signal "Go"

  • Publish GPS address in start/finish directions.

   Buoys

  • Large bright-colored with anchors.

  • Install from safety boats on the day of the race.

   Safety Boats

  • Required at all races.

  • Minimum of 2 power boats with trained rescuers on board equipped with First Aid Kit, Stop-the-Bleed Kit, and AED (Defibrillator) Kit.

   On-shore Safety

  • Engage a local EMT resource which is briefed on the race and able to respond quickly.

  • First aid kit.

  • Electro lite drinks at the finish.

   Life Jackets

  • Required in or on  all crafts.

  • Required to be worn in choppy or otherwise dangerous conditions (improves individual safety and enables easier boat rescues).

​​

   Oysters or Rocks

  • If present, strongly recommend sneakers or water shoes.

​​

   Insurance

  • Use PaddlesportRiskManagement.com  for race insurance with signed liability waivers, consent by guardians for minority (under 18) racers, and naming of SEP Series directors as additional insured ($25 fee).

   Liability

  • SEPSeries directors/administrators are only responsible for race scheduling, definition of classes and calculating points. Race organizers  are responsible for everything else, including  safety (both water and shore ), compliance with Covid-19 regulations, design of routes, insurance, race website content, and all other  matters specific to their race.
